Some Effects of Maleic Hydrazide on Plants

Abstract
12-day-old barley plants sprayed with 0.2 and 0.4% solns. of maleic hydrazide (MH) as diethanolamine salt ceased growing and died in 5 weeks. Aerial parts of plants harvested 12 days after treatment exhibited lower fresh wt. but greater dry wt. than unsprayed plants. Analyses indicated large increases in fructosan polysaccharides. A combination spray containing 0.2% MH and 0.1% 2,4-D produced less injury than where MH was used alone. MH applied to a kidney bean leaf 24-48 hrs. prior to treatment with a drop of 2,4-D soln. interferes in some way with translocation and the curvature effect of 2,4-D in the epicotyl of young plants.
