Variation in the Constituents of Milk Under Arizona Conditions. III. Variation in Milk from Jersey, Guernsey, Holstein, and Mixed Herds

Abstract
Variations in herd samples of milk from 2 Jersey, 1 Guernsey, 3 Ilolstein, and 5 mixed herds each of 30 cows or more were studied on samples taken monthly. Data are presented graphically and max., min. and average values presented in tabular form. Three Holstein herds averaged 8.48% serum solids and 3.48% fat. Other herds had individual tests below the legal minimum for serum solids but averages over 8.5%. The variations from winter to summer show all constituents are higher in winter except the chlorides. Milk from herds kept under marginal conditions of feeding was slightly lower in the various constituents. Herd samples representing production of one day may be abnormally low in serum solids but well above the minimum in fat.
