Silicon in Cow's Milk

Abstract
Milk from 6 cows fed alternately for a 4-month period on a control ration and 1 containing a silicon supplement (sodium silicate) was analyzed photometrically for silicon content. Control samples averaged 1.43 mg of Si/1; samples obtained when the cows received the supplement averaged 1.39 mg/l. Wide variations were noted from month to month and between individuals. Feeding of the supplement did not consistently or significantly increase the Si content of milk. Regardless of breed, group, or treatment, there was an unexplained but definite and significant decrease in values as season and stage of lactation progressed.
