Abstract
Wheat lines carrying a single A. elongatum (Host.) P.B. chromosome either as a monosomic substitution or as a recombined wheat-Agropyron chromosome exhibited an abnormally high frequency of transfer of this chromosome to their progeny. This was due to a high frequency of preferential transmission of the chromosome or the wheat-Agropyron chromosome through the female side which was accompanied by low seed fertility. The chromosome apparently carries a gene which induces preferential abortion of gametes that do not carry it. The occurrence of such genes in a number of species and their significance are discussed. This publication has 9 references indexed in Scilit:
