Abstract
The writer has long been seriously concerned about the very poor grasp of physics shown by students embarking on courses of higher education in science and engineering. Very intelligent students who have obtained high marks in the G.C.E., and who have memorized great numbers of facts, show very little knowledge, and less understanding, of basic principles. As part of an investigation into the causes of this serious situation I recently worked rapidly through a dozen textbooks, making notes of the more obvious errors.
