This paper presents original and recent evidence on the scale and structure, evolution and causes of external manufacturing investment in Devon and Cornwall. External investment is shown to be very important, and to have grown considerably during the last three decades. Externally owned units are analysed in terms of their size, manufacturing sector and parent company characteristics. Regional policy has played a critical role in attracting significant levels of greenfield branch investment, while external acquisition of existing firms has increased rapidly. Findings demonstrate the current central importance of large firm branch plants to the region's manufacturing activity. POTTER J. L'investissement externe se voit très important et a considérablement accru pendant les trois dernières décennies. Les établissements à propriété externe sont analyses en termes des caractéristiques suivantes: taille, secteur d'activité et siège social. La politique régionale a joué un rôle primordial dans l'attrait des investissements considerérables en faveur des établissements situés aux espaces verts, tandis que le rachat externe des entreprises existantes a sensiblement augmenté. Les preuves laissent voir l'importance fondamentale des établissements des grandes entreprises à l'activité industrielle de la région en question. POTTER J. Dieser Aufsatz legt eigenständige, in neueren Untersuchungen gewonnene Belege über Umfang und Struktur, Entwicklung und externe Investierung in der verarbeitenden Industrie in Devon und Cornwall vor. Es wird gezeigt, daβ externe investierungen sehr wichtig sind, und in den letzten drei Jahrzehnten beträchtlich zugenommen haben. Einheiten in externem Besitz werden in Bezug auf Gröβe, Industriesektor und Eigenschaften der Stammfirmen hin analysiert. Bei der Anzichung von Investierungen in Zweigstellen “im Grünen” hat Regionalpolitik eine kritische Rolle gespielt, und der Erwerb bestehender Firmen von aussen hat stark zugenommen. Die Befunde demonstrieren, daβ die Zweigstellenniederlassungen grosser Firmen gegenwärtig von zentraler Bedeutung für die Herstellungsleistung der Region sind.
