Abstract
Using 2-dimensional chromatography, the amino acid constituents of various tissues of D. virilis were investigated. Glycine alanine, valine and leucine were found in sperm and semen. The hydrolysate of isolated giant salivary-gland chromosomes had in addition aspartic and glutamic acids and proline. The whole gland contained in addition these compounds giving the ninhydrin reaction serine, lysine, threonine, arginine, tyrosine, phenylalanine and 4 unidentified compounds. Male gonads contained the same amino acids as the salivary glands with the exception of arginine and 3 of the unidentified substances; brains isolated from larvae lacked glycine as well. Arginine may not be an essential part of the protein material of sperm or chromosomes of this form. Keywords
