Abstract
The avian renal portal system can be functionally altered by the action of an intraluminal smooth muscle valve which can direct iliac vein blood toward or away from the renal parenchyma. The excised value responded to autonomic drugs by contracting with acetylcholine and hista-mine, and relaxation with epinephrine. The acetylcholine response was potentiated by physostigmine and inhibited by atropine. Atropine gave evidence on in vivo studies of relaxing the valve, thus allowing blood to bypass the renal parenchyma. Para-aminohippuric uptake in renal slices was not significantly altered by atropine. Keywords
