Incidence of Diagnosed Sarcoidosis in Louisiana1,2

Abstract
During the period from July 1, 1949, through June 30, 1959 the disease occurred about 65% more often in females than in males, about 7 times more frequently in Negroes than in whites, and its peak age incidence was in the 3rd and 4th decades. In Negroes, incidence was greater in more urbanized than in less urbanized parishes, but this may have resulted from differences in accessibility of medical centers. Incidence of sarcoidosis was significantly correlated with pine forest distribution in the less urbanized parishes but not in the more urbanized parishes; findings consistent with the hypothesis that sarcoidosis is associated with exposure to pine forests. However, the possibility that the findings were due to differences in availability of skilled diagnostic facilities, could not definitely be ruled out.
