Electron Paramagnetic Resonance of Several Rare-Earth Impurities in the Cubic Perovskite KMgF3

Abstract
The electron paramagnetic resonance spectra of doped KMgF3 single crystals containing Yb3+, Tm2+, Er3+, Dy3+, and Gd3+ have been observed at 9 GHz. Cubic symmetry sites have been identified for these ions and the data indicate that the Yb3+, Tm2+, Er3+, and Dy3+ substitute for the sixfold-coordinated Mg2+ ion, but that the gadolinium probably substitutes for a twelvefold-coordinated K1+ ion. Noncubic symmetry sites were also observed for Yb3+, Er3+, and Gd3+. Hyperfine structure for the isotopes Yb171, Yb173, Tm169, Er167, Dy161, and Dy163 was identified, and in some cases superhyperfine interactions with the fluorine ligand ions were observed with good resolution.
