Abstract
A new approach based upon the retention of acid inhibitors in dental plaque was suggested. Laboratory technics for the screening of compounds to conform to this theory were devised and performed on 381 compounds. Of these compounds, 10 were found to be effective. Three of these were tested in vivo in dentifrices or mouthwashes and it was found that all 3 materially decreased the rate of acid formation on tooth surface over long periods of time. Continued daily use of these compounds has shown that their efficiency is maintained. Two of these compounds, Na N-lauroyl sarcosinate and Na dehydroacetate, are now under clinical test to measure quantitatively their therapeutic effect on dental caries. Keywords
