Evidence for a Collective $E 2$ Resonance in the Reaction ${}^{208}{Pb} (p, γ) {}^{209}{Bi}$

Abstract

An

E 2

or

M 1

resonance is observed in the reaction

{}^{208}{Pb} (p, γ_{0} γ_{1} γ_{2}) {}^{209}{Bi}

at

E_{p} ≃ 20.0

MeV (

E_{x} ≃ 23.7

MeV) with a width

Γ \sim 3.5

MeV. Present evidence supports its identification as a collective

E 2

excitation.
