Abstract
Corrections due to Coulomb and exchange interactions between valence electrons reduce cohesion, without altering much the relative stability of the various phases. The dipolar interactions between saturated sp3 dangling bonds stabilize the corrugated layers and the helical chains observed for penta and hexavalent elements respectivelyKeywords
