THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE ELGIN AND THE PHILLIPS MEASURES OF PROCESS-REACTIVE SCHIZOPHRENIA

Abstract
The degree of scale consistency, inter-rater reliability and scale intercorrelations for the Becker-revised Elgin Prognostic Scale and the Phillips Prognostic Rating Scale were examined. Two psychologists rated the case histories of 80 schizophrenic patients at Boston State Hospital with both instruments. Inter-rater reliability for total scales was above .90 for both instruments. The split-half measure of consistency yields .81 for the EPS and .88 for the PRS. The most crucial finding was that the correlation between total EPS and PRS is .87 and .78 for the short version (Part I) of the Phillips. These subscale inter-correlations suggest that research studies based upon the use of the Elgin EPS may be compared directly with those which employ the Phillips PRS.
