SCHIZOPHRENIA: CORRELATES OF LIFE HISTORY

Abstract
A formulation (18) which proceeds largely from Sullivan''s self-theory suggested that severity of schizophrenic manifestations would be related to the developmental epoch at which the circumstances of living became extremely deviant. As was predicted, pathogenicity of the environment of persons during development was correlated with manifestations during the adult psychotic episode, i.e., with (a) Rorschach age-level, (b) Rorschach pathology rating, and (c) symptom pathology ratings. Inter-judge agreement on all ratings was high. The sample was 238 schizophrenic patients studied at a Veterans Administration hospital. Results reported are interpreted as empirical support for the position that schizophrenia is a set of plural states (ranging from benign to malignant), rather than a unitary state which can be handled as a homogeneous whole in study and experiment.
