Cardiomegaly of Unknown Cause Occurring in a Family

Abstract
FAMILIAL cardiac enlargement of unknown cause was described by Evans1 in 1949. He presented the clinical and pathological features of 3 patients in two generations of a family, and his report included 7 other patients presenting similar clinical and pathological features. He also called attention to a case presented in 19422 discussing 3 siblings with cardiac enlargement of unknown cause. Because of the close resemblance, clinically and pathologically, of Evans's 10 cases he applied the name familial cardiomegaly to the entire group.
