Abstract
"You say the American Indian is especially prone to have gallstones — so what?" The question,1 though heavy with scientific ennui, is not lightly dismissed.Analysis of the contents of the gallbladder to investigate stone formation is not new. Poulletier de la Salle analyzed gallstones 200 years ago.2 Until recently, however, such efforts have been rather desultory. The materials examined were obtained from heterogeneous groups of patients who presented episodically, the composition of stones was not clearly identified, the samples studied usually consisted of detritus-rich contents of gallbladders that had been sick for years, and biochemical methods were rudimentary.
