Since the last London Post was written over two years ago,1 the British medical scene has been unsettled on account of economic factors, government policy, and professional problems.Whether the so-called monetarist policy of the Thatcher government is considered to be harsh or just realistic may depend on one's own political viewpoint, but it has undoubtedly had a profound effect on the National Health Service (NHS), the universities and their medical schools, and research activity.
