A comparison of the speech of ten chronic Broca's aphasics following intensive and non-intensive periods of therapy

Abstract
This study examines the speech of ten chronic Broca's aphasics following a three month programme of intensive speech therapy in a residential setting. The speech scores are compared to those obtained on completion of a three month period of non-intensive therapy pre-course, and a second three month period of similar non-intensive therapy post-course. The mean group results show significant speech improvement during the intensive period with no significant change during either of the two non-intensive periods. The results support allocation of time to the assessment and intensive treatment of selected Broca's aphasic patients, lend approval to the provision of intensive courses for this purpose and claim that at least some patients can make significant speech progress many years post-onset of aphasia.
