IS PRIMARY HEMORRHAGIC THROMBOCYTHEMIA A CLINICAL MYTH?

Abstract
A case is presented of a 44-year-old white male, originally thought to have primary hemorrhagic thrombocythemia, finally showing the classical picture of myeloblastic leukemia. Necropsy confirmed the diagnosis of leukemia. The available literature on primary hemorrhagic thrombocythemia is reviewed and it is suggested that all previously reported cases with adequate follow-up can be explained on the basis of an unusual variant of a more common hematologic disorder.
