Abstract
The exchange of chains in mixtures of hemoglobins at neutral pH and 37[degree] has been demonstrated by detection of the appropriate hybrid species by using quantitative starch-gel electrophoresis. Exchange occurs not only when one of the hemoglobin species used contains a single type of chain, but also between hemoglobins containing both [alpha]- and [beta]-chains. With hemoglobins containing [gamma]-chains, the proportion of new species formed is less than with hemoglobins containing [beta]-chains, both in experiments at neutral pH and when acid pH is used to increase the extent of dissociation. This publication has 18 references indexed in Scilit:
