Abstract
Repeated measurements of plasma, blood and "extracellular" fluid (NaSCN) volumes, hematocrit values, plasma protein conc. arterio-venous O2 differences, and circulation time were made in 16 Macacus mulatta monkeys throughout the fatal course of Plasmodium knowlesi infections. Statistically significant alterations were found in hematocrit, "extracellular" fluid volume and total erythrocyte mass early in the course of the disease. In addition, plasma and blood volumes and total circulating protein were found to be significantly altered as the fatal course progressed. From measured NaSCN volumes it is suggested that the permeability of the tissue cells is progressively altered in fatal simian malaria. Keywords
