Abstract
Measurements of the photoionisation of Ba+ ions by VUV radiation have indicated cross sections in excess of 10-16 cm2. This is two or three orders of magnitude greater than would be expected from direct, outer-shell ionisation and it suggests that autoionisation can be extremely important. This view is supported by the results of preliminary calculations. Keywords
