Effects of Brain Lesions on Electroencephalographic Activation by 35 Kvp and 100 Kvp X-rays

Abstract
Brief head exposures to 35 kvp and 100 kvp x-rays were given to 3 groups of rats. Electroencephalographic recordings were made on sleeping rats before, during and after exposure. Exposure to 100 kvp x-rays produced, electroencephalographic activation in rats without brain lesions or with lesions of the cerebral cortex, but 35 kvp x-rays were much less effective. These results indicate that peripheral sensory stimulation is not essential to the reaction. Lesions of the olfactory bulbs almost abolished the response to x-rays, indicating a critical role for this brain region in radiation-induced neural activation.
