Abstract
Semiclassical mean field techniques are used to describe the M1 scissors mode in the neutron-proton interacting boson model. The resulting expressions for the energy of the mode are as simple as those obtained recently in the classical limit. The mean field approach, however, yields much better agreement with exact neutron-proton interacting boson model results. Keywords
