Abstract
To the Editor: Virtually every writer on the subject of acupuncture claims that one of the foremost advantages is its safety. The procedure has gained wide popularity throughout most parts of the world; yet there has been no concomitant regulation or licensing of the amount and quality of training required for the safe practice of acupuncture. As a result, complications — including damage to a nerve or artery, infection, pneumothorax and injury to vital organs — have been increasingly reported.1 2 3 4 5 A 67-year-old woman with a history of recurrent cutaneous herpes had 11 recurrences after 20 acupuncture treatments over a period . . .
