Abstract
THE association of salmonella osteomyelitis with sickle-cell anemia is well known,1 but that of pneumococcal meningitis with sickle-cell anemia has not been reported. In a recent survey of 305 patients with sickle-cell anemia, hemoglobin C-S and hemoglobin-S-thalassemia disease we have noted that in 87 per cent of patients with proved bacterial meningitis and sickle-cell anemia, the pneumococcus is the responsible organism even in an age group when it is not the most common etiologic agent. There are only 2 reports in the English literature in which meningitis in patients with hemoglobin S is described.
