Abstract
The topography of the fibrillar center and other nucleolar components was studied during oocyte growth in the golden hamster. The fibrillar center shows a tendency for marginal distribution, which is characteristic of both the initial period of large growth and its final stages. Localization of the fibrillar center correlates with the amount of granular component and the general level of the nucleus transcription activity. A possible role of the marginal localization of the nucleus fibrillar center in the maturting oocytes is discussed as a distinguishing trait of chromosomes that enter into meiosis.
