Abstract
The optical absorptions associated with polarons and bipolarons in a diatomic polymer (A?B are studied within the continuum limit. Analytic expressions are obtained and compared with previously known limiting cases. Our results clarify greatly the role of symmetry in determining the relative strengths of these absorptions.
