Congenital aphasia

Abstract
Congenital aphasia occurred in a child who also had cyanotic congenital heart disease, which led to his death. His learning and intelligence were within normal limits, and, with special instruction, he had acquired considerable useful language. Autopsy revealed bilateral old infarctions in the sylvian regions and severe retrograde degeneration in the medical geniculate nuclei. Lan-guage function therefore appears to have been subserved by pathways other than the primary auditory thalamocortical projection system.
