Abstract
A review of aspects of the cholinesterase (ChE) literature from Feb. 1948-Dec. 1950 with 141 references. Recent work from the author''s and other laboratories on the specificity of ChE''s was first reviewed. The ability of both forms of ChE to hydrolyse aliphatic esters was emphasized and the differences in specificity were related to the size of the acyl group and the molecular shape of the whole substrate molecule. A section on the mechanism of the catalytic activity of ChE''s followed, recent work on the mode of action of the P-containing antiChE''s (DFP, TEPP, etc.) was reviewed and discussed, and finally an account was given of the distribution of ChE types in mammalian tissues and of the posssible functions of the various tissue ChE''s other than that of destroying endogenously released acetylcholine.
