4-Aminopyridine Effectiveness Reevaluated for Reducing Blackbird Damage to Corn

Abstract
Additional treatment forms of 4-aminopyridine (4-AP) to reduce blackbird (Icteridae) damage to field corn were tested in 1976 in Ohio [USA] and compared with the registered treatment form (FC-99). In spite of rapid bait disappearance, a 3% 4-AP treatment was significantly more effective in reducing damage than the 1% registered treatment (FC-99). More than 3 times as many blackbirds were found dead in fields receiving the 3% treatment compared to the 1% treatment. Nontarget mortality appeared low. These studies indicate that changes are needed in the method of application and perhaps dilution rate if 4-AP is to be an effective and flexible management tool to help reduce blackbird damage to maturing corn.
