Abstract
At present there are more than 40 million women in the United States who are over 50 years of age. Indeed, one third of a woman's life is spent after menopause. Great effort must therefore be expended to understand the physiologic changes of the female climacteric, in order to address the health problems that women experience during this time. The cessation of ovarian secretion of 17β-estradiol is the principal endocrine event in the menopause. Thereafter, estrogen is produced only by extraglandular conversion of plasma androstenedione to the weak estrogen, estrone.1 Clearly, it is estrogen withdrawal that leads to vasomotor instability . . .Keywords
