Abstract
The energy contributions given by second-order perturbation theory for the hyperfine interaction become finite when the delta-function is replaced by an exponential. The exponential is also a better approximation than a delta-function to the hyperfine potential derived from the Dirac theory. The results are applied to the 1s and 2s states of the hydrogen atom. The effect of the second-order terms is small. Errors in an earlier calculation are discussed. Keywords
