Reduction potential, energy exchange and cell growth

Abstract
The effect of succinate, cysteine and formate on anaerobic growth of Bacillus coli in lactate-fumarate medium was examined. Succinate and cysteine inhibit anerobic growth, while formate in low concentrations increases growth, probably due to high rate of energy production. It is concluded that the rate of growth of B. coli is not dependent on the oxidation or reduction intensity of its environment.
