Observations on Experimental Dental Caries

Abstract
Sex differences in caries susceptibility of the golden hamster were studied in 2 groups of litter-mates, newly weaned animals, which were reared for a 100-day exptl. period on the cariogenic diet. Group 1 was composed of 32 males and group 2 of 32 females. Males and females exhibited the same caries activity. These results are at variance with what most N. American workers have observed, i.e., that male are usually more caries-susceptible than female hamsters. These contradictory findings may be explicable by the existence of strain differences with respect to sex-specific differences in caries susceptibility of the hamster.
