Abstract
Findings have been presented that seem to prove that there is a definite relationship between progesterone secretion and the phases of vaginal cornification during pregnancy. If there is an adequate development of the corpus-luteum of pregnancy, the vaginal cells show a low estrogen level, and many can be found that have been called "pregnancy cells" by Papani-colaou. Practical use of this knowledge has been made over a period of five yrs., by making weekly vaginal smears throughout the period of gestation. When the cells were indicative of a high-estrogen phase of cornific action the adm. of progesterone or its equivalent seemed to balance the estrogen-progesterone ratio required for normal pregnancy, and abortions and miscarriages were prevented in all but three of 141 cases studied. This publication has 2 references indexed in Scilit:
