Abstract
We have calculated the rate of para- to ortho-hydrogen conversion when the transition occurs in a physically-adsorbed-gas surface layer above a magnetic substrate. The conversion rates for surfaces with dilute, random, paramagnetic surface sites and for surfaces with a regular lattice of magnetic sites are considered separately. Absolute rates in terms of physical parameters are obtained for a variety of different physical situations. Keywords
