Abstract
A combination of reductive and oxidative operations was proposed as a means of selectively converting 17-hydroxycorticosteroids into 17-oxosteroids. The suitability of sodium borohydride for effecting the reductive step was demonstrated on the preparative and on the analytical scale. The reaction sequence - reduction with borohydride, followed by glycol fission with bismuthate - was employed to develop a method for the determination of urinary total 17-hydroxycorticosteroids by their conversion into 17-oxosteroids in urine and measurement of the latter as chromogens in the Zimmermann reaction. Keywords
