Effect of Colchicine on Taurine Excretion.

Abstract
Since many effects of colchicine parallel those produced by X-rays and the latter are known to increase the urinary excretion of taurine in rats, the effect of colchicine on taurine excretion in rats was studied. Urinary taurine in 12 fasted rats during two 24 hours control periods averaged 2 micro-moles per hour. In the first 14 hours after 1.6 and 3.2 mg/kg of colchicine taurine excretion increased to 4 and 6 times the control level, respectively, but after 6.4 mg/kg taurine output only doubled the control level. Preformed tissue taurine did not appear to be the source of the extra urinary taurine excreted after colchicine administration.
