Abstract
Ivy uses Schafer''s terminology: (1) an "autacoid" is in general a specific organic substance formed in one tissue and passing into the circulating fluids to influence the functions of other tissues somewhat as do drugs; (2) hormone is an excitatory autacoid; (3) chalone is an inhibitory autocoid. After an extensive review of the important role of hormones or autacoids in digestion, Ivy concludes that the discovery of chemical methods for the isolation of the various active principles is essential for the correct evaluation of the mechanism of the production and specific action of these hormones. This publication has 3 references indexed in Scilit:
