Abstract
A multicentre open clinical assessment was carried out in 442 hypertensive patients, poorly controlled or intolerant of their existing therapy, to evaluate the usefulness of indapamide in treatment under the normal conditions of general medical practice Indapamide alone was used in approximately 86% of the patients, but it was associated with other antihypertensive agents in severe cases. Patients received single daily doses of 2.5 mg indapamide {5 mg in 38 patients) for periods ranging from 1 to 18 months. The results showed that after treatment, mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures (standing, recumbent and after activity) were significantly reduced to within normal age-related limits. Improved blood pressure control was reflected by favourable changes in ocular (fundus and retinal arterial pressure), cardiovascular complications (cardiomegaly and left ventricular hypertrophy), and in symptomatology. Biochemical and clinical tolerance was good. Keywords
