Abstract
The erythrocyte transketolase activity and the effect of thiamin pyrophosphate stimulation (TPP effect) on this enzyme have been determined for about 360 Malaysians who included members of the military and police forces, athletes, laboratory personnel, prison inmates, pregnant women, and several beriberi patients. Using the guideline that a TPP effect of greater than 25% is indicative of thiamin deficiency, we found that a significant proportion of our apparently healthy subjects (between 21 and 36%), may be regarded as thiamin deficient. By the same criterion, severe depletions of body thiamin were observed for several beriberi patients. Keywords
