The Maximal Tubular Reabsorption of Phosphate in Relation to Serum Parathyroid Hormone

Abstract
The tubular reabsorption of phosphate is affected by multiple factors. It is well established that parathyroid hormone (PTH) causes phosphaturia, by depressing the renal tubular reabsorption of phosphate (1); but the renal function (2), the (intrarenal) calcium concentration (3), the acid-base balance (4), the extracellular volume (5), the circadian rhythm (6), steroids (7), diuretics (8) and vitamin-D (9) have to be taken into account, when the role of the parathyroid hormone in the regulation of the renal handling of phosphate is evaluated.
