Multiple factors contribute to the process of deciding on a choice of treatment for the patient with cancer. Some of these factors, such as the histologic diagnosis, stage of disease, functional status, and pattern of metastatic spread, are attributes of the tumor and are fairly objective in nature. They represent the cornerstones on which both treatment recommendations and assessments of the efficacy of treatment have been based.
