Abstract
The chemical effects initiated by x irradiation in the simple peptideN‐acetylglycine have been examined by electron spin resonance. The paramagnetic fragments produced in the temperature range 77–300 °K have been observed in irradiated single crystals of the peptide. Positive identification of the radicals have been made using isotopically labeled acetylglycines incorporating both carbon‐13 and deuterium at selected sites. Proton and carbon‐13 hyperfine tensors have been determined for most of the fragments and a reaction scheme is presented which rationalizes the production of the observed species in terms of initially produced anion and cation radicals. Keywords
