Abstract
In 1930 Pemberton and Geddie1 reported on a 14-year-old girl with hyperparathyroidism successfully treated by removal of a parathyroid adenoma. It is the purpose of the present report to describe a second child seen at the Mayo Clinic who had hyperparathyroidism due to a parathyroid adenoma and to review briefly the literature on this disease as it relates to children. Report of Case An 11-year-old white girl came to the Mayo Clinic on July 27, 1957, because of alopecia and change in the nails. Six years previously the mother of the patient had observed that the child was losing much of the hair from her scalp. The loss of hair was severe during winter months, but it would partially regrow during the summer months, only to be shed again during the following winter.
