Abstract
A theoretical model of the -center absorption band is described. From it are calculated both the magnetic circular dichroism (MCD) and the spin mixing in the optical-pumping cycle. Despite the fact that it is based on the sometimes doubtful adiabatic approximation, in general, agreement with experiment is good. In particular, it shows that a moderately large MCD effect will be accompanied by a relatively small degree of spin mixing.
