Abstract
THE onset of lactation in the early postoperative period after incisions on the chest wall is an unexpected event both to the patient and to the surgeon. A few days after surgery, either one or both breasts engorge; lactation begins soon thereafter and persists for months or even years. It is usually associated with lateral thoracic incisions and is not accompanied by amenorrhea.
