Abstract
One hundred twenty-eight cases and 31 sub-clinical Brucella infections occurred in 9 months among employees of a swine slaughter house. Twelve strains of B. melitensis and 7 strains of B. suis were recovered from 19 of the cases. The attack rates among various groups of employees were related to the area of the plant in which they worked rather than the intimacy of their contact with animal tissues. Epidemiological data suggest that air-borne transmission may have been a factor. Blood agglutination tests on a sample of hogs slaughtered at the plant revealed 0.9[degree]/o of 1156 butcher hogs and 2.2% of 405 sows reacted positively in dilutions of 1160 or higher. Keywords
